Ballet and Tap

Ballet is the foundation of all dance and is a wonderful form of dance focussing on line and posture.

Dance to your own Tune

Suitable for ages 2 ½ to 5 years

The Pre-School Dance Curriculum aims to capture and nurture young children’s instinctive joy of movement and freedom of expression.

The Pre School Dance classes are designed to enable children to participate in dance activities that are developmentally appropriate, helping to facilitate the learning of dance skills at a later age.

The goals for the Pre-school Dance Curriculum are:
•    To enhance children’s movement abilities and physical fitness
•    To aid children in becoming physically and spatially aware
•    To stimulate children’s listening skills
•    To encourage children to move expressively
•    To build children’s confidence and self esteem
•    To encourage children to become co-operative and sociable

The content of the class is therefore non prescriptive, i.e. there are no set exercises to follow. To help stimulate the creative process, themes are provided within each level along with the use of props.

Classes are based on the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus which is designed to encourage and develop a child’s natural sense of movement, musicality and imagination.

Classes include:
Classical Ballet – focussing on posture, classical lines and positions. This works to strengthen and extend the muscles to give the impression of defying gravity.
Free Movement – developing the pupil’s natural sense of movement. This encourages musicality and develops co-ordination and the use of gravity.
Character Dance – from Grade 1 upwards Hungarian, Russian and Polish dance help to develop rhythm and style.

Pointe Work
Pupils will be advised when they are strong enough to start pointe work, which is usually around 12 years old.

Age for other Ballet and Tap Classes

Children are generally placed with their age group, starting with Pre-Primary at school age. The Royal Academy of Dance has age guidelines for grades (required for examinations) which have been designed to work with the natural development of the child. New pupils will be advised of the correct Grade for their age and experience.

Royal Academy of Dance Class Awards and Examinations and International Society of Teachers of Dancing Class Tests and Examinations

Examinations at all grades are optional and any pupils who do not wish to take examinations will move up with their group to the next class, following the examination session providing they are ready. For those pupils who do wish to take examinations it is expected that they have studied the syllabus for at least a year, have good attendance and are committed to home practice.
